Do you have green fingers? Want to support people with a learning disability? Can you spare a little time every few weeks?

Then perhaps you could help maintain an outdoor garden space for our service in Amesbury.

This service is home to two gentleman who would love to use their back garden, but find it difficult due to it becoming overgrown.

Mencap runs and manages homes across the UK for people with a learning disability, many of which have outdoor spaces that need maintaining. These are important spaces for the people we support to get outdoors and interact with nature, and each other. Your time and skills as a Gardening Volunteer will make a big difference to these people enjoying this special space.

As a volunteer, you wouldn't need to be an expert gardener, but some gardening experience would be useful and you should be able to work independently to keep the garden tidy.

Ideally, you would be able to commit to an hour or two every couple of weeks. However, do still get in touch if you can't make this level of commitment.

As a volunteer you could be doing some of the below:

  • Pruning and cutting back shrubs
  • Creating flower beds
  • Cutting the grass, weeding, and potting planters
  • Having conversations around the next project the people we support would like to see in their gardens

As a Gardening Volunteer you will be:

  • Friendly and Approachable
  • Reliable, Kind and Patient
  • A good communicator (including listener)
  • Be able to work alone and with others
  • Willing to volunteer within guidelines and to take direction where necessary
  • Accepting of others who might be different to yourself

As a Mencap volunteer you will:

  • Make new friends
  • Agreed out of pocket expenses to be paid (eg. travel)
  • Full Training and support
  • Volunteer alongside experienced care professionals
  • A chance to give back your local community
